LTC Joseph Alessi
Professor of Military Science

     LTC Joseph P. Alessi a native of Youngstown, OH, earned his B.S. in Secondary Education/Comprehensive Social Studies from Youngstown State University (YSU) in 1990.  While attending YSU, he earned a commission as an officer in the United States Army through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps in June of 1989.  While serving on active duty as an Infantry officer, LTC Alessi completed his M.A. in History from YSU in 1999 and his PhD in History from Saint Louis University in 2005. As a Soldier on active duty, LTC Alessi served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, Battalion Operations Officer, Brigade Operations Officer, Division Chief of Plans and Chief of Training, Assistant Professor of Military Science at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO, commanded an Infantry Rifle Company in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and held the position of an Assistant Professor of History at the United States Military Academy (USMA).  LTC Alessi is currently serving as the Professor of Military Science for the University of Pittsburgh. 
     LTC Alessi’s publications include the American Bicentennial Oral History Project from Youngstown State University, multiple submissions in the International Encyclopedia of Military History and Treaties with Indians, as well as several book reviews.  His latest work is his book manuscript entitled Settling America: Indians, Euroamericans and the Establishment of Frontier Towns, 1580 – 1840.  Additionally, LTC Alessi presented several conference papers to include: “Settling the Pennsylvania Backwoods: Logstown and Its Influence, 1748-1763” at the Pennsylvania Historical Association’s Annual Meeting; “Indian Allies in the French and Indian War” at the New York Military Affairs Symposium; and “Settling the American Frontier” at Penn State’s Lewis and Clark: Unheard Voices Conference.  
     In addition to his civilian education, LTC Alessi’s military schools and education include the Infantry Officer’s Basic Course, the Infantry Officer’s Advance Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Airborne School, the US Army Ranger School, The Sabalauski Air Assault School, the Unit Movement Officers Course, and the Command and General Staff College.  His awards and decorations include: the Parachutist Badge, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, the Ranger Tab, Air Assault Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three bronze oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters, the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. 
MSG Christopher Painter

Master Sergeant Christopher S. Painter entered the service at Fort Benning, GA and completed Basic Training and AIT at 1-38th Infantry Regiment. His first duty assignment was in 5-20th IN, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey Korea. While assigned he served as a rifleman, saw gunner, and M60 gunner.  Following Korea, MSG Painter served with the 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, GA. While assigned to 2-7 IN, he served as a rifleman, Bradley Infantry Vehicle driver and gunner.  Following Fort Stewart, GA, MSG Painter served with the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, GA.  While assigned to 1-30th IN, he served as a Rifle Squad Leader, Bradley Commander, Company Master Gunner, and Battalion Master Gunner. He was later assigned to Fort Benning, GA as a Drill Sergeant with 2-58 IN, Infantry Training Brigade.  Following Fort Benning, GA, MSG Painter served with 1-325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd  Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC. While there, he served as a Platoon Sergeant in A/1-325th Airborne Infantry Regiment and First Sergeant for C/1-325th Airborne Infantry Regiment.  MSG Painter’s deployments have been Operation Iraqi Freedom I (Iraq), Operation Enduring Freedom V (Afghanistan), and 3 Intrinsic Actions (Kuwait).

MSG Painter has completed Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, U.S. Army Advanced Airborne School, Jump Master, Drill Sergeant, Master Fitness, and Bradley Master Gunner School. He has completed Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, and Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course.  His awards include the Ranger Tab, Senior Airborne Wings, Air Assault Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Drill Sergeant Patch, and Polish Jump Wings.  His decorations are the Bronze Star (2), Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (9), Expeditionary Service Medal w/Arrowhead Device, Good Conduct Medal (5), Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the South West Asia Service Medal.

MSG Painter is currently assigned to University of Pittsburgh Army ROTC, serving as the Primary Instructor at California University of Pennsylvania.  He resides in Greensburg, PA with his wife and two children.

       
MAJ Roy Beeson

MAJ C. Roy Beeson is a native of Wilmington, Delaware. Upon graduation from MoravianCollege, He was commissioned in 1997 a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery from the Lehigh University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. He is a graduate of the Field Artillery Officers Basic Course, Field Artillery Captains’ Career Course, and the Combined Arms and Services Staff School.

MAJ Beeson started his career in the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.  There he served as a Company Fire Support Officer for B Company, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry. He later served as Executive Officer for Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Battery, 3d Battalion, 7th Field Artillery and Executive Officer for B Battery, 3d Battalion 7th Field Artillery.  MAJ Beeson was then assigned to the 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Stewart, Georgia.  There he served as the Task Force Fire Support Officer for 4th Battalion, 64th  Armor.  He then deployed to Kuwait as the Assistant Operations Officer for 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery in support of OPERATION DESERT SPRING and later in Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.  After redeployment to Ft.Stewart, MAJ Beeson served as the Battalion Intelligence Officer for 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery.  He then took command of B Battery,  1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery and deployed to Iraq once again in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM III.

MAJ Beeson’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star device, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge. He has also been entered into the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.
MAJ Daniel Morris

 Major Daniel Morris currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Science and the Panther Battalion Recruiting and Operations Officer for the University of Pittsburgh main campus ROTC.  He is the primary instructor for MS-I students.

     Prior to his assignment to the University of Pittsburgh, MAJ Morris was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), at Fort Polk, LA from May 2004-June 2007, where he served as Battalion Effects Coordinator for 2-30 IN, he commanded A Battery, 5-25 Field Artillery, and served as the Assistant Regimental Fire Support Officer for 2nd ACR.

CPT Theresa M. Bodnar was born in Ashtabula, OH and is the daughter of Paul and Antoinette Bodnar. In 2001, CPT Bodnar graduated magna-cum-laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from JohnCarrollUniversity (JCU), University Heights, Ohio.

CPT Bodnar was commissioned through JCU’s ROTC program as a Second Lieutenant Quartermaster officer and entered active duty on 15 January 2001. Her first assignment was as a Goldbar Recruiter at JCU for six months.  Following her officer basic course, she was stationed with the 7th Corps Support Group (CSG) in Bamberg, Germany, where she served as both a Supply Support Activity Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer with the 147th Maintenance Company (Kitzingen, GE), and the Assistant Group Adjutant with the 7th CSG (Bamberg).

In June 2005, she was assigned as an Army Reserve Troop Program Unit (TPU) Soldier with the 2d Battalion (TS) (CS/CSS), 312th Regiment in Oakdale, PA.  She was mobilized one month later to Fort Dix, NJ for 24 months where she performed duties as a Leader’s Training Instructor, Observer Controller Trainer, Assistant Battalion S3, and later Company Commander of  Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 312th Regiment.

CPT Bodnar entered the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program in July 2007, where she is now serving as Assistant Professor of Military Science at Robert Morris University.

CPT Bodnar has attended the Quartermaster Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Company/Detachment Pre-Command Course, and the Combined Arms Exercise Course.

Her decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 1 OLC, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Meritorious Unit Award.
